If you intend to remain in the San Juan metropolitan area, any vehicle will be fine. If you intend to go to more rural areas, you may wish to rent a smaller vehicle. The roads are super narrow, parking spaces are tight, and smaller cars will be easier to maneuver.

This rental office is in the city, not at the airport, but very easy to find and get to on foot / by bus / by car. Driving in Puerto Rico is fun! There are some speedy / reckless drivers, but most people are courteous and alert and tend to actually stay below the speed limit. Roads can be narrow and curvy and sometimes not clearly marked, but it all works out ok.

You definitely need to purchase insurance since PR isn’t covered under most policies. Pay attention to the location of the car rental facility. Make sure to take pictures or video of any existing damage on the vehicle. Even if you’re staying outside of San Juan, I’m not sure purchasing the toll pass is necessary. The tolls are $1 and the pass is $5/day. Unless you’re making multiple trips back and forth, opt out and pay at the end.

Book a small car. Large cars are too hard to maneuver in the crowded streets of San Juan. Parking a larger car is very difficult (I drive large cars daily).

Driving in San Juan was very easy! Roads are well- marked and easy to navigate, no trouble at all!! I HIGHLY recommend downloading the toll app and adding $20 to avoid fees charged by the rental company, check into that because if you plan to drive around the island you will Need the toll roads!!

In airport car rentals are usually much more expensive than off airport car rental locations. My wife and I fly to San Juan airport frequently and there are many car rental locations just a short drive outside the SJU airport; anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes when there is no traffic.

Don’t use cell phone, talk while driving. Will get a ticket . Don’t carry jewelries with you. Don’t leave visible things on the car. Visit Caribe Hilton, El San Juan Hotel, Piñones. See La Parguera, rent a boat there. Go to El Conquistador and Luquillo beach. See El Morro.

If you are renting from the airport, be sure to use one of the rental companies that is actually across the street from the airport. Many (like Ace) advertise that they are at the airport, but require a shuttle that you have to wait for both ways.

  • The roads in San Juan can be a little bumpy and rough. Additionally, their narrowness can be somewhat intimidating to tourists. So, you’ll need to drive with caution even though you are sightseeing. Motorcycles are also very common in Puerto Rico, and motorcyclists tend to drive quite fast and will cut in front of you; so beware.
  • During rush hour the traffic can get a little heavy. The morning rush hour typically begins at around 8:00 a.m. and continues through 9:30 a.m. or so. In the evening, commuters will begin to return home at 4 p.m., which will cause some congestion on the road until around 6 p.m.
  • Because public transportation is limited and doesn’t go very far, you’ll want to rent a car during your stay in San Juan. A rental car will give you the freedom to explore places on the island, like Cueva Ventana or Arecibo Observatory. Additionally, you’ll be able to better explore much of the nature and picturesque scenery as you drive along the coastal highways. You can also drive through the rainforest – an unforgettable experience.
  • Besides all of the great reasons to visit Puerto Rico, there are quite a few annual events in San Juan that make for a good reason to get car rentals in San Juan. In the month of January in old San Juan, you can find one of the most anticipated events every year called Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastian. This multi-day event in January features overflowing plazas with artists showcasing live music, circus acts, and dance performances from Thursday to Sunday. To begin with, the amount quoted was definitely not what I received from Kayak. They obligated to take their insurance because I didn’t show proof, ( a letter), indicating that my insurance would cover vehicle. Otherwise, I couldn’t take the vehicle. That’s real bad business and will NOT EVER recommend Dollar rental to anyone and maybe even Kayak because of false quote.

You should have told me it was not on the airport property. You need to clearly disclose that you need to wait for a shuttle to go off property to get your car. Finding the shuttle is hard and takes too long. Cheap price is good but not if you don't disclose the inconveniences,

Upon arrival from CT, I was told my reservation had been canceled the night before! More outrageous thing was that I was forced to take insurance full cover!!! Either that or stay stranded without a car. I believe that was rip off and illegal, since i had declined insurance because my own insurance covers rentals. Staff was not helpful and did not seem to care that they took advantage of travelers with a blank stare. Also, I was charged a whole day plus taxes, fees and insurance for returning the car one hour late!!! Won’t rent from Dollar again. Better get Uber. Stay away from this company!!!

The Payless location is small (being remodeled so messy) and not too attractive. They will require you to show proper insurance coverage (both collision/damage and 3rd party accident "SLI" coverage) which I had and brought proof from my policy, or they will pressure you into taking their insurance (which can be quite expensive). Overall the process of getting a car was fairly quick and efficient, and early morning return was also fairly quick, although we had to wait about 20 minutes for the airport shuttle to arrive.

I didn’t like that Kayak/Expedia/RentalCover.com sold me an insurance policy that Payless refuses to accept as coverage for their rental cars. Additionally, my concerns and feedback have never been acknowledged by any of those 3 entities involved in selling the policy. Most of all I cannot get my money back because neither of them will respond. AT All!

No way to figure out which shuttle to take to get there. Once there, the upsell was brutal. Gave us a car that smelled like cigarette smoke. Drop off people acted like you were bothering them to be there.

At counter, poor slow service. After been pick up at airport. My experience was horrible. Vehicle schedule for 2pm. Did not get in a Vehicle to 4:35pm. Reserve an medium SUV. They tried giving me a Corolla. They said next available Vehicle would be available after 5pm. Finally offered a Jeep. Had ta hassle with counter person to offer same price. After driving couple of hours at night time. Vehicle show a roach Infection. Let them know as I return Vehicle. It did not show it matter as another person was waiting for it. Also watch out for additional charges been applied without your approval. Like PEP. It was removed after request. Will not use this rental again.

The pick up was easy, clear and fast. Once in garage my vehicle was showing a signal light issue but the team was able to gave me another vehicle fast and gave me even 10% discount. Drop off was the same easy and Fast. The entire staff in pick up and drop off were very polite and professional.

We requested a large SUV - like an expedition. Instead we got a palisade. We had 8 adults and luggage for a week, so it was extremely cramped and uncomfortable anywhere we went. The Hertz team initially told us that is would be 35 minutes while they cleaned the vehicle for us. But they just immediately gave us the palisade. We were happy to wait for the correct size vehicle, but they would not give it to us. Extremely disappointed in Hertz this trip. We would have even settled for two vehicles instead, but they would not accommodate. I’ll rent somewhere else next time.

Their branch at the airport never picks up the phone. Fajardo was very easy to communicate. took more than 30 min to actually get the car in the airport, waiting in the heat. other than that everything else was ok

The first car they gave me broke down in less than 3 hours of driving to my air bnb, it was as if they didn’t even check to make sure the car was in working condition. But they did get me a new car right away. Just sucks that I wasted an entire day of my vacation stuck on the side of the road waiting for them to pick it up.

Didn't like anything the price was too much I paid too much after I put it on the side and it tells me just this amount and when I get there they charged me almost $600 plus the car was not comfortable inside the seats were dirty Sophie's roadside feeds deductible feeds personal protection feeds Municipal text fees airport Access fees facility charge fees energy feeds license fee vehicle access fee I don't even know what the hell is that I think they charge every fee there is in a book my experience with Thrifty never again

Booked at set rate for honda crv didn't have the car when I arrived and gave me a smaller vehicle which barely fit our luggage and charged me additional $175 in fees not disclosed when I booked online. The mitsubishi eclipse cross is not in the same size category as a Honda Crv which is why I booked.

Pros:

The staff was very friendly. I rented a Jeep Wrangler and received a Honda CRV. I would not have mentioned it, but it was specific that it was a Wrangler to enjoy the environment on this vacation. Our flight was late, so they cancelled the Jeep and gave it to someone else after two hours. Nowhere does it say after two hours your car is cancelled ( I would’ve called if I knew this information). They did not call to confirm.

They didn’t have a car for me. The customer service at the station was awful. The young lady at the desk couldn’t have cared less about the fact they had no car, despite me booking one. The main depot didn’t even answer the phone to her so she could get an update. I eventually walked out after I was an hour late after my booking time, with no car. So disgusted. I am an ex Avis employee so it’s even worse!

Nothing. I arrived at 10:00 AM. I waited in the hot garage with mosquitos for 45 minutes. We got our car after 11. The computer system was down so the 2 customers in front of me took about 25 minutes each.

Cons:

We showed up at 10:00 AM, we should have gotten our car before 11....We could have been allowed to wait in the AC instead of the hot mosquito infested garage... The employee could have moved a little quicker. I would not rent here again. The car gas tank could have been full instead of 5/8's, so many things could have been better.

We had a two week rental. On first day of the tental the agency called saying they had no cars leaving us stranded at our Airbnb. He said they might have a car later or maybe it would be 3 days. For hours after that call they would not answer their phone.. Finally they did answer and he had one come in.
